Outdoor Learning Cards Course

Make the most of your school site and outdoor learning

The outdoor learning cards activities contribute directly to a wide range of educational and development aims for young people and cover four elements of outdoor learning that can be delivered on a school/youth club site and surrounding environment:

  • Orienteering - developing good map reading skills
  • Team building and problem solving - how to challenge your young people
  • Bouldering - Use of low level climbing walls
  • Journeying - Local visits organised by young people

The cards are supported by a handbook and CD that provide detailed information on all aspects of activity delivery. All key elements for successful delivery are explored further in the 6 hour training course.

Visit Leader Course

Do you lead visits or help with school visits? - then this course is for you! This is a practical course for all school staff but especially for staff leading visits.

Visit leader training is focused on active risk assessment and group management on educational visits and off-site activities. It is a OEAP certificated course transferable between employers.

The course covers the identification of relevant significant hazards and the importance of placing of successful control measures including supervision and group management strategies.

The course is offered in support of the leader's role in educational visits and off-site activities. It remains the role of the employer (e.g. head of establishment, senior youth worker or educational visit coordinator) to determine the leader's suitability and competence to undertake a leadership role on any particular visit or venture.

Basic expedition leader

Basic Expedition Leader

The sports leaders UK level 3 certificate in basic expedition leadership is a nationally recognised qualification that trains and qualifies teachers, youth workers and other members of the community to:

  • Lead walking groups in lowland countryside
  • Impart the knowledge and skills needed to undertake a day walk
  • Have responsibility for the care of others while leading a day walk in lowland countryside
  • Plan and lead overnight base and mobile camps.

It is the minimum qualification required by some licensed organisations for those wanting to train and lead groups in the expedition section of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

The level of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award that a basic expedition leader can lead depends on the terrain in which the expedition is taking place.

The terrain must fall within the BEL Operating Remit.
